Storage in small city backyards can be tricky—but with a little creativity, it’s easy to incorporate smart solutions that are both functional and beautiful. Here are three of my favorite ways to sneak in extra storage without sacrificing style:

1. Storage Benches with Top-Opening Lids

Multi-functional seating is a must in tight spaces. Built-in benches with lift-up lids create hidden storage perfect for garden tools, toys, and smaller cushions. Bonus: they double as extra seating for guests and help keep clutter out of sight.

2. Use the Space Under a Staircase for Storage

The area beneath a backyard stair is often too shady for plants and too awkward for furniture, but it makes an excellent spot for a larger built-in storage enclosure. Think of it as your backyard’s utility closet—great for storing rakes, brooms, sports gear like skis, or even a small lawn mower.

3. Prefab Storage Trunks or Sheds

If custom isn’t in the budget, a well-chosen prefab storage trunk or shed can still look great and offer serious functionality. For trunks, I love teak for its durability and clean lines. For sheds, opt for cedar or a low-maintenance composite. These can hold anything from outdoor cushions to large tools and equipment—all while blending into the space.

With thoughtful placement and the right materials, even the smallest backyard can stay tidy, organized, and stylish year-round. This large one from Frontgate is one of my favorites and we used it below.
